Netlabel Tracker #9: Ambienteer

Music is a great communications channel, James Fahy, better known by his super hero name ‘Ambienteer’ regularly expresses himself using ambient music. Okay, I’m cheating, he doesn’t run a netlabel, but he does share his art with the world.

Random Access Recordings - Invisible Agent Netlabel Tracker

Netlabel Tracker #8: Random Access Recordings

The netlabel tracker continues its endless quest in search of quality netlabels that are active and innovative. I’m concentrating hard to spread the tracker across as many genres as possible and encompasses music with acoustic guitars as much as synthesized beeps and booms. After homing in on a particular label & genre I squeeze every last bit out of my Internet connection amassing the collections of quality and free music that are on offer. So far I’ve happily filled 10Gb of my hard drive with netaudio, no credit card needed to ride this train!

When it comes to dirty, low, rib cage rumbling bass mixed with a dose of jump up, not many people do better then !kaboogie. Purveyours of grimey dub, they propagate the work of Irish DJs and producers through their label and club nights. It happens to be !kaboogie’s 5th birthday soon, and as a big […]

Netlabel Tracker #7: unfoundsound records

For the last tracker in 2010, I’m proud to present Philadelphia-based label ‘Foundsound Records’. Foundsound showcases quirky, dancefloor-friendly minimal Techno and Microhouse. Their first 12″ vinyl was released in June 2004 and with 23 releases and counting they’ve been a busy crew. On the flip side they run Unfoundsound Records and release high quality music under Creative Commons.

yuki yaki

Netlabel Tracker #5: Yuki Yaki

Yuki Yaki is an artists platform and netlabel focused in the area of electronic media. I’d rather not box them in and state their focus is in IDM, minimal techno, electronica or clicks’n’cuts. I’ll happily point out they differentiate themselves with an excellent range of high quality output. An impressive list of heavy weight producers on the audio side with a short but excellent video & photographic roster. I’m going to have to mention Maps and Diagrams, Scaff and Lackluster. Head on over to yukiyak.org and get downloading. Delicious!

Scott Bywater from the Cambodian Space Project, who I might add have just returned from a tour of France, handed me their shining new […]

Netlabel Tracker #1: Forest Records

Welcome to my new Netlabel tracker. Suitably named with a nod to the historical events surrounding the creation and expansion of Netlabels from the tracker scene in the 90’s. For this first instalment it gives me great pleasure to (re)introduce the fabulous Forest Records.

monkey business

Lots of services, not much choice.

If you have an account on any of the popular music download services you will notice selected tracks labeled as ‘Album Only’, meaning that you can’t buy them individually, only as part of the entire ‘album’. So who’s in control of this activity? the artist, the record label or the distributor?

The war on music

It’s foolish to ignore the future of music distribution. It’s obvious that the old encumbents are bloated and slow to act.
